Pay TV powerhouse hones choices for CEO

The search to fill one of the most coveted jobs in Australian pay TV –CEO of the Premium Movie Partnership — has narrowed to two contenders.

They are Peter Rose, one of the pioneers of the feevee business when he was hired to keep afloat the Australis platform (it went belly-up after he left), and Jack Matthews, a U.S. cable TV exec.

PMP CEO Bob Donoghue is retiring after running the firm –co-owned by Sony, Paramount, Universal, Fox and Liberty Media — since its inception seven years ago.

The partners have conducted interviews in L.A. with Rose (who returned to Oz late last year after spearheading marketing for London-based UIP for three and a half years) and Matthews, who until a couple of months ago ran a cabler/telco service, Telstra Saturn, in New Zealand.

The two were short-listed from a lengthy list of applicants for the well-paid, high-profile job.

No decision is expected for a few weeks, but Matthews, who is well versed in the U.S. cable biz after serving with several MSOs, is being tipped.

Matthews might be seen as a better fit culturally with the studios, although the straight-talking Rose knows his way around Hollywood and is far more attuned to the Aussie pay TV scene.
